Not every chicken here has a breeding assignment.
We also keep a mixed backyard flock whose most important jobs are eating bugs, following us around the property, turning garden scraps into compost—and keeping our kitchen supplied with fresh eggs.
Our backyard girls give us a colorful assortment of eating eggs that can vary with the season and the hens currently laying.

Because our hens aren’t machines, quantities will naturally fluctuate throughout the year. Heat, cold, molting, daylight hours, broodiness, age, and normal laying cycles can all affect availability.
